Local surroundings and local history as teaching source - A study of a pilot project in Ostrobotnia - Abstract Liisa Kärkkeinen

I have been working three summers on Åland Islands in its most popular tourist attraction called Kastelholm castle. The castle area includes besides the pittoresk medieval castle, also a prison museum and an open-air museum. During the summer different workshops are organised and visitors of all ages can enjoy trying out different hands-on activities. Thanks to this work experience I became interested in the pedagogical possibilities of historic environment. So later I was glad to get a chance to write my master's thesis related to a school project dealing with historic environment education.

This project was a pilot project lead by an association and there were four participating Ostrobothnian schools. The aim of the project was to help the schools to use their surroundings as a teaching source. The aim of my master's thesis is to report and evaluate how the project was experienced by participated teachers and to investigate their thoughts related to local cultural environment and its role in the school education.  In my presentation I will give you an insight on some of the project activities the schools were working with and I will also tell you some aspects of how the teachers experienced working with the project.
