2018 South Africa

Create a Legacy through the Time Travel method

The Bridging Ages International Conference was held from 11 to 13 September 2018 at Freedom Park Museum and Heritage Site, Pretoria, South Africa was a great success.

Hosted by Bridging Ages South Africa and supported by the National Department Arts and Culture and Freedom Park, it was attended by 150 delegates on day one, and more than a hundred delegates the other days, from South Africa, Kenya, Sweden and Finland.

Participants included delegates from museums, non- governmental organisations, cultural groups, educators and in the Time Travel event also learners from schools from Pretoria and surrounds.

In the Time Travel event the focus was on preparations for Nelson Mandela’s visit at Freedom Park 2009. The participants were asked to make a manifesto on how to meet the challenges of today, like racism, corruption, health, education, gender, unemployment and how to engage the masses. That is to live the mandate and legacy of Freedom Park.

The conference was addressed by senior government officials, including the Chief Director International Relations, DAC, the Swedish Ambassador and the CEO of the Nelson Mandela Foundation, Mr.Sello Hatang. The conference was part of the celebrations of the centenary of Nelson Mandela.

Bridging Ages Conference in Freedom Park
“This is how I felt during the conference in Freedom Park: the venue was excellent and then entire atmosphere was positive and, you could feel the mood of the Time Travel, guests invited were also wonderful.
When it comes to learning: the participants were so active and I felt so good to learn about the area of Silverkop and Freedom Park. I learned that in South Africa there are many similarities in different communities in terms of social challenges that we face every day as compare to other countries.
Overall evaluation: the conference was wonderful.”

”I really enjoyed Bridging ages/Time travel conference in Pretoria. It gave a lot back to me and my colleague. The variety of lectures, national and international, and outcomes of the workshops held a high standard.
The entertainment by different youth programs was also an important part to give intercultural value to the conference.
On a personal note I also appreciated that both female and male presenters was in the program.”
Johan Eggers
Teacher - Rödeby primary school Sweden.

“Thank you for organising a great conference. It was a challenge to bring it together, considering that the working committee are all in different provinces, and yet you pulled it together with great success.
Well done.”
Samantha Blanckenberg, Bridging Ages Northern Cape

Thank you for the opportunity to present once again. I found the topics and interaction wonderfully appropriate, encouraging and informative.
I came away from the programme feeling that your work as a team and its objectives have been very complementary to the South African evolving heritage...one that is inclusive. The time travel process has - as an objective thereof, been the ideal methodology to access so many intold stories.
Thank you.
